Time out! Even I need time out to regroup and look at what is important to me. That's what the steps do for me. The steps are living principles which are timeless based on a philosophy of good living. And when the world seems hell-bent on delivering less than perfect results, even then they can really undermine the imperfectly perfect moment of now.

A good friendship went haywire. My mum back in hospital. Finding myself with nothing to say which could improve anything meant that silence was indeed a golden and opportune way to get back on track. I can cope with just about anything, and not need or even feel like drinking alcohol. I'm careful about clinical depression and where it may lead, type I diabetes and being vigilant on a daily basis, and the number one reason why I can cope is because of Fellowship and not drinking one day at a time. And even in Fellowship sometimes, we need find like-minded individuals to help when life is full of difficulties and not much respite.

To thine own self be true. A desire to live in an open, honest and willing manner. To experience every moment of life and understand the can do and cannot do and the wisdom to know the difference. I have been forgetful in recent days about saying the serenity prayer when I wake up, mainly because I felt numb and unable to fathom a solution out of broken parts. Some say, if it ain't broke don't fix it, I say, sometimes things have been breaking down for a while and a bit of denial can go a long way to becoming closed down, dishonest and unwilling to face the truth. Fortunately getting back on track is quite easy by going to a few meetings and seeing what happens when we don't face what is going on, and the real truth of now.

An acquaintance from thirty years ago, and a former life, invited themselves back into my life, and truthfully I had no intention of going down that memory road. People do mellow over the years and do change, but the acquaintanceship was always based on an unequal relationship of influence and power. I really don't like exerting power or having power exerted over me, and that I suppose was the tipping point of letting go a haywire relationship in the present day. Some things we cannot change, not in other people, but we can change ourselves and what we do as a result. And sometimes what other people do is simply not for us in any shape or form. The only judgement is about what I can do positively without impacting in any way on the doings of others.

Even if we see the danger, the fear, the pride and ego that may be erupting in other people, we do not have to follow blindly, and we do not have to accept lies and deceptions which will lead into further disruptive and unhelpful behaviour. In other words, sometimes we do have to let go and be silent, regroup, take a timeout and get on with what is important and how we wish to live our own lives.

I have often suggested it is better to have a mini breakdown every day, rather than save it all up for a major breakdown further down the line. A major breakdown can be very disruptive and take quite a while to get over, if we ever do. And yet we still learn something whichever way these things happen. And it's really important not to be too nosy about what else is going on with other people, not to be an ostrich sticking my head in the sand, more to be clear on what I stand for, and get on with what is important to me. This may seem a little bit harsh or even prideful if I were to be intervening or wishing to undermine another person or people who have their own paths to lead.

Easy does it? Not blinking likely. I am concerned about my mum, she is in hospital with a heart condition and she is eighty-two. One of the nurses asked whether she would like to be resuscitated if her heart failed, which made her cross and indignant. I have been asked that question before now, about DNR, and I certainly wasn't in my right mind when I gave them a very curt reply. Asking a patient about DNR in the emergency department is not very clever behaviour under any circumstances. Our national health service is sick.

In this world… Now that I am sober I recall the program on TV where one person used to say, "I didn't get where I am today by being…" And I didn't get where I am today in my life after a decade of sobriety to be screwed over or screwed up by other people. Which is vital and needs to be based on that darned serenity prayer: "to God or in good conscience, or in my case surrendering to the truth of now; grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference." Or I might find myself living in a world which is not only difficult, it will be impossible to live with any sort of serenity in the moment of now.

And now for the mice which might trip me over and ignore the elephant. The repair to my abode was undertaken recently, and I had to wait a while to work out what I want to do about it. Although the repairs were made with good intent, the overall quality has been somewhat shoddy. You would imagine that replacing a walk-in shower floor which was leaking into the apartment below would be done efficiently. On the third attempt in the last few weeks, after considerable effort by workmen, the floor is uneven and traps water creating puddles. The replacement of the kitchen sink is off true, one end out of line with the other. The mouse proofing has been undone as part of the repair processes, and other waterproofing matters have been done in a way which leaves rough edges and visible cracks. All these things could make a person feel very unhappy. Especially as some of these matters were first reported in 2009 and it's now coming up to 2015. These are mice, not elephants. The elephants are about the emotional and spiritual welfare of me and those I care for, those I love and wish to cherish one day at a time. And thankfully the elephants are being looked after by a set of timeless principles and the fellowship which helps me live to these principles and make the best choices, and be free to live life well, one day at a time.

How am I feeling this morning? Hungry, angry, lonely or tired? None of these, but friends have felt this way and some family. People get bullied a lot in life by other people who think they know better. And one of the best pieces of news I have heard came in the form of acceptance in the big book. It reminded me that if I don't know what is right for me, how on Earth could I know what is right for you? I don't. And I'm not God like. I hope to be a human, having a human experience.

Many years ago I was bullied into a nervous breakdown. I had no clue what to do about this. I did not recognise that I was on track to be trapped between my personal values and integrity, and my desire to be right. I was quite confused about the rules of engagement with a bully. If you recognise a bully and that they may try draw you into a situation, walk away. No amount of personal power will overcome positional power in any walk of life without a war. And if you don't have the positional power, likelihood is that you will be flattened. Walk away…

Difficult advice, to walk away from a bully? Of course we all feel empowered to crush characters like these. And then we become the bully. It takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to deal with a difficult child. Sometimes it can be very difficult to disconnect from those who influence our lives, in family, community, society and work. If you are walking into a new environment, check out how people are doing. Some places are just not worth entering when we know what we're dealing with. Courage to walk away will save a great deal of horror and discomfort. And just because hitmen are cheap these days, it is never an option for those who need peace of mind.

If you find there are people in your life who make you feel "less than" and they are not about to change their attitudes, best make a swift exit if you can. Very difficult to do when we feel "less than" already and we have forgotten that we all have a right to be here.

Even when people have been in recovery for years and years, you will see those who have happy lives, are having a great experience because they live and breathe all twelve principles. And when life turns bad and ugly, the twelve principles help with the experience. And of course the serenity prayer works whether you believe in God or not. Can do and cannot do and the wisdom to know the difference. And those who have longevity in recovery, and no feeling for life, they can be very, very difficult individuals who know the answers and the principles and yet cannot put them into practice. Or you can be like me, have good, bad and ugly experiences, sometimes walk away, and then realise what has happened and then the feelings come out. More often though, whether I am having a good, bad or ugly experience, if I ask myself in the moment, "how do I feel about this?" Then feelings emerge in the moment of now and the emotional and spiritual connection is made.

One principal defects of character is to forget to ask myself how am I feeling in the moment and do something about it. Somehow, there seems to be a time delay in my emotions, because like anybody else I can be taken by surprise, and my feelings are playing catch up with reality. And sometimes when I walked away from situations, I would have been better to stand still. Of course if a bus, or a bully is moving my way, momentum will take me away from those dangers. Hopefully… Most often? Sometimes…

Dear defects of character, namely, pride, ego and fear! Where are you? My landlord rewired my abode, workers in and out surveying, more work to be done, caused by damage, the flooring of the wet room to be replaced next week. How am I feeling? Every day. I practice meditation around step one, powerless over people places and things, step two, insanity, available any day with the invasion and intrusion. Step three, let go and accept the disruption. And so far I feel good and respectful of those working on behalf of the landlord.

When people have to intrude to work and I have to stay put and be with them, it can bring up all sorts of issues. What they might think of me? No, this didn't happen. I didn't feel any judgement, even if there was any it didn't matter. I am what I am.

Chatting to people whilst they work, becomes very illuminating about how jobs get done in quite big organisations. Somebody tenders a contract, they get the job and then it is subcontracted out to self-employed individuals. And when it comes to accountability, it may seem like those who have contracted are accountable, but they are not because of the way matters are arranged. And governance, compliance and meeting legal requirements are not tested. I just hope the fuse box works, and the repair to the floor works. There is no comeback or accountability in all these activities.

So how am I feeling about that? Let it go. And if nothing blows up all will be well, and if nothing leaks, all will be well, and if my window winder is fixed, I can shut the window. And if my gas boiler is recharged, it won't break down. And if the special liquid is applied to the radiators, they won't leak. I feel okay even though it could be a completely different story if I had indulged in all of step six and not let anything go.

Every night: step 10 to check my personal inventory, gratitude for what has been accomplished so far. I was able to accept everything that has happened, the noise, the incessant drilling and rewiring. I even managed to get new tyres and brakes on the bike, so it is roadworthy once again. I have gratitude that step seven, kept me sane: improving on my shortcomings. Every day, courage to change, faith in doing the next right thing and being confident enough to speak up, and continue to speak up when the need arises, and it is pertinent to do so.

I feel happy, that there is some justice in the world of football, if I look at the news, there was so much going wrong, insanity is only an arm's length away. It is a mad, mad world. Thank God for Fellowship and truth.

June 10 Video

Step six month: asking for help with our defects. Number one defect denial of truth. Surrendering to the truth can be a difficult and lengthy process. When we find the world is quite disagreeable, we become disagreeable. At extremes whole nations become disagreeable, society can feel disagreeable, community and family can feel disagreeable. And worse, when we are really ticked off, even Fellowship can feel disagreeable! Thankfully I don't feel disagreeable right now.

Changes happen all the time, and in recovery the primary areas which impact greatly on whether we are agreeable or disagreeable with the world, or a person, place or thing, is usually around romance and finance. Once we are sober, which can take quite a while, romance and finance, inevitably become part of recovery. If we have agreeable feelings around romance and finance, hopefully we find contentment and excitement, and every emotion agreeable. If however we feel we are missing out, romance and finance not happening to the right level of contentment and excitement, life can be very disagreeable.

And other things need to be taken into account in the world of step six and step seven, simply we need to start with, "to thine own self be true," and see if we are in an agreeable or disagreeable state of mind. If we are feeling agreeable with the world, open to the possibilities and feel right in ourselves, anything might happen. If we are uncertain, and I'm sure we all are quite often, asking for help is a truly good idea. And there are always plenty of people with an opinion. Just be wise in sorting out what is right for you.

If I don't know what is right for you, how can I possibly know what is right for me? Actually, this particular phrase is written the other way round, "if I don't know what is right for me, how can I possibly know what is right for you?" The problem is that we can find plenty of advisers who have ideas about what is right for us and make that judgement and share it with us in the name of love. Unfortunately people who offer advice on what is right for us? They may have our best interests at heart, or most likely their own interests at heart, and at the same time. Which means their wisdom is likely to be faulty and based on self-interest rather than your interest.

Fortunately I don't know what is right for me, and I'm working on it on a daily basis, and by bedtime, I can use step ten and gratitude to help me sort it out. Which means I have no clue what is right for you, although I have plenty of wisdom and still no answer which would satisfactorily make things right. And I won't know what is right for me, until I get there, in the meantime however, life is agreeable, I love people and people love me back in the world is full and I have useful endeavours I enjoy. There are endless possibilities every single day, and this happily makes life very confusing.

I guess what we fear most is loss. And losing love and intimacy on whatever level, emotionally and physically, will always hurt and we will grieve. But that's okay, because that is life one day at a time. We might deny changes because they are disagreeable, at the same time as one door closes, the doors open, very agreeably as we become open to life in all its manifestations today.

Some parts of the year can be very difficult, memories of times past need to be honoured. June was a good month for me over the years, as most summer months were. Particularly in the romance and finance departments. But since recovery, every month is bloody difficult, romance and finance need foundations in truth. Needs met wants forgotten? When will I know if my needs are being met? Easy to answer that one, I set my expectations to zero every morning, and no resentments are being constructed. So I feel quite comfortable now, having said all that. But the trouble is I'm a human being with defects of character, which are bloody nuisance.

Learning how to love, learning how to be loved back and live a useful life whatever your endeavours is key. We need to learn how to love, and we need tolerance and love. Tolerance and love through self-appraisal can hopefully lead to an understanding of how the current conditions and history impact on every human being. Forgiveness for what we have done is absolutely necessary, and so is forgiveness for everyone. We are all learners, sometimes quickly, most often slowly in my case, and hopefully truth emerges, and love returns one day at a time.

How we look after ourselves defines very often how we look after others in our lives. If we have self-worth, we learn to respect and love and cherish. Or we can go back into old behaviour of self-harm and caring less, not only for ourselves, we can become careless with everybody. Driven by thinking and actions we can tread roughshod over our own feelings about ourselves and completely ignore the feelings other people have. Self-care in this emotional and spiritual world, learning to love oneself then means we understand the emotional and spiritual impact we have on everyone.

Tolerance and love, forgiving everyone for how they behave. Every person has feelings, their emotional spiritual welfare is contingent on the current conditions today. Emotional and spiritual? Feelings fitting with the moment and that we can cope with the reality, the truth of now. Forgiveness releases the burden of trying to control outcomes whether they are good, bad or ugly.

In recovery we are not on trial, in recovery we are learning by our mistakes on a daily basis. And I wonder sometimes if mistakes are often covered up because of fear, pride and ego. When I make mistakes, I would rather share them with the world, and not covering up because it takes too much energy and in the end the truth comes out.

June is an interesting month in my progress. Every year since 2004, I have been learning more about the defects of character: which are about pride fear and ego. I don't know if I can share step six, without reference to step seven, shortcomings: short on, courage to change, faith in doing the next right thing and the confidence to face the truth, and surrender to the truth of who and what we are. If I'm short, or have shortcomings of courage, faith and confidence, most likely pride fear and ego are looming ahead and in me in the moment. Step six and seven, always part of the moment, often it is the difference between denial of what is happening now, and acceptance of the truth of now.

Maybe we hear something inadvertently or deliberately which can undermine our serenity. The undermining of serenity can be a jolt of truth, or it might be malicious intent. We don't know which they are until we stop long enough. The problem is when we are not aware of the truth, or we have difficulty finding out what the truth is, isolated thinking will rumble into the grip and darkness of pride, ego and fear.

When I evade truth and don't tell the truth, what am I hiding from? Something which is going to hurt my feelings usually. If I cover up, the answer is obvious, my feelings are hurt in some way, or I fear hurting the feelings of somebody else. And for whatever reason, I need to deal with those feelings around pride, ego and fear which will only get worse until I find courage, faith and confidence to let truth emerge as best it can.

An emphatic no is better than a half-hearted yes. And sometimes it takes a lot of courage, faith and confidence to say no. No stops everything that we don't feel right about doing. And a simple no, it shuts the door to our own expectations, as much as anyone else's expectations. Expectations, without foundation are resentments grinding away and undermining serenity. Let go expectations, make space and freedom to choose whatever path is open. To thine own self be true.

Coping with reality: emotional and spiritual progress and never perfect. Defects of character play a very big part in our recovery. Fear pride and ego can bend anyone out of shape. Fear makes us weary and tired, but it's still there and eats into serenity. Fear of loss, fear of being found out, fear of not being good enough, all play a part in undermining truth. Pride, will silence many people and stop them telling their truth in case they might lose something: people places and things. Ego demands that the truth cannot be told all the consequences of loss will undermine what we think we are entitled to keep for ourselves.

Can do cannot do, and wisdom to know the difference. The principles of being: open, honest and willing to change. This is very positive. And of course, fear, pride and ego will undermine making many a person close down, holding on, dishonest and unwilling to change. Greedy to keep parts of the old life, at the expense of the new life. Greedy, needing to be involved and intimate, based on deception and misdirection.

When we covet, hold onto things, people and places and cannot let go for fear of losing out, we bind ourselves into a madness and insanity, which will prevail if we do not accept and surrender to truth. Truth is that life changes, outlooks, attitudes and feelings alter as situations and new living emerges. When we feel the need to move on and let in new people, places and things, new possibilities, it is imperative to share this truth with those we cherish. And if we do not cherish them, people places and things, we have no business trying to hang on and pretend that everything is just the way it used to be.

Sometimes people don't fear being found out, in some cases it makes life a lot easier to sort out. In any Fellowship, family and community, people just keep on talking and talking. And the primary defect which emerges is gossip. By the time gossip reaches those most concerned and at the centre, what was innocent can become vile and abominable. Truth is lost, moment by moment and undermines love. Truth and love in the moment is spiritual. And part of the emotional and spiritual journey is experiencing our defects of character in the reality of now. Whenever we deviate and come up short on courage, faith and confidence to be truthful we are stuck in defects of character.

Until we engage with the right people in the right places and doing the right things, it can be very difficult to see truth, and then live the truth of now. Sometimes it feels better to be stuck in the mud with everybody else gossiping away the lives of other people. Far better to concentrate on our own lives. I often suggest that the currency of living can be measured in how we are able to love people, be loved back by people and find useful endeavours in whatever field of activity we choose. Being able to define ourselves as capable of loving others, being loved back by them and a life with useful things to do, is far better than sitting in judgement of others. Even though we might find it better not to judge others, this is a defect of character which blocks useful endeavours.

A casual remark, with a grain of truth can go to the good. A grain of truth can hold the key. Finding the truth in those grains of gossip is a rare commodity. And anyone might spend a lifetime missing the point of living. When endeavouring to live well, to thine own self be true first, then share it and see what truth emerges from those who matter most. Some suggest, least said and soonest mended. I might suggest simple ordinary truth will lead to mending far quicker than interrogation with retribution in mind. The road to hell is paved with good intent, and sometimes good intent is not so good, it depends on which side one sits in this world of fear, pride and ego.

Anyone anywhere can experience doubt, and the only way to deal with gossip is not indulge, simply go back to the source and see what happens. Truth is always good, even when we don't like the consequences, because truth does set people free to make their own choices, rather than live in the mud and muddle created to undermine and demean for whatever reason.

Defects of character impact on the good, the bad and the ugly. Because we can all be good, we can all be bad, and carry the burden of ugliness from time to time. Sometimes we hang on, when we should let go far more quickly. Sometimes our shortcomings of courage, faith and confidence are lost in the mire of intrigue and curiosity. Courage to change, faith in doing the next right thing and confidence to surrender to the truth. It stops us humans from holding on to other humans to whom we have no rights, enslaving others and stopping their emotional and spiritual development. One day at a time, working on the shortcomings of courage, faith and confidence, we learn to surrender to the truth and let go our fears and our pride and our ego.

June 5 Video

Somebody said yesterday that step six and step seven are so important, and somehow these particular steps get forgotten. I cannot understand how they can be forgotten, step six is the start of a revolution in ourselves on the road of emotional and spiritual development.

Step six: all of step six defects, which start with emotions: in my case, pride, ego and fear can lead me into extreme feelings, and anger often leads to resentment in no time at all. Defects of character? Simply, it does depend on asking for help to understand how we behave. Sometimes we behave badly as we react to the reality of now. Reality, if we can cope and deal with reality, experience these defects of character which will come up every day, we will learn how to let go of our own self-righteousness and see our mistakes in handling situations. We need to make mistakes, or actually we need to live life, and know not only that we are learning how to cope, so is the rest of the world.

I cannot change my history. And my primary defect of self-harm, put me in a place of fear and desolation, which only started to change very gradually, and very painfully from day one of trying to be sober, and actually, accepting I needed sobriety. To admit and accept were key questions asked when I was in a particularly nasty rehab, which has closed down. Other people were asked to judge me and give an opinion of whether or not I admitted and accepted that I was an alcoholic. Step one, to admit and accept that I am an alcoholic, it is something I need do every day in sobriety, or I forget and then defects and the very worst one might happen because of my neglect.

When councillors encourage the inmates in a rehab to judge each other in their ability to admit and accept their addictions is a curious state of affairs. In my opinion, asking sick people to judge each other in their early days is not only tragic, it sets people against each other in a particularly dangerous environment. At the time, it seemed an infantile preoccupation which was done twice a week. And then I saw just how dangerous these particular activities are, damaging people, and some condemned themselves as a result. Looking back, in any other environment, it would be criminal to demean and undermine human beings in such a way. Councillors are not God, and should not offer Godlike judgement to those in need of help. We judge ourselves badly enough, and gossip and judgement are primary defects which kill people.

Present day: how am I feeling right now? I feel good, happy and content. Three phone calls from the local government people, wanting to arrange improvements to my environment. I have already arranged a medical appointment, and need to arrange two more. So I'm making progress! But I need to be careful, because I can procrastinate, get frustrated when the bastards don't answer the phone, and of course I can be a bastard too, and never answer my phone after 10:30 in the morning, I do this, or there would be no peace and no serenity in my abode! I can be a difficult "bastard," to get hold of any time of day… And being human, sometimes we need solitude and time to rest, or we would be no good to anyone anywhere at any time.

Step six: all about defects of character, or simply aspects of our character, our personality traits which have been pushed to extremes. Number one defect before recovery, drinking to excess, drinking myself to near death. And all the way towards an unnatural end, denial and absolute "want" beyond reason kept on driving me into the ground and unconsciousness. Drink when sleep, drink, then sleep, always teetering on the brink of extinction at the end. And the end was not death, it was acceptance that I could not drink alcohol in any shape or form again…

Pride, ego and fear at extremes, denial of the problem and not able to ask for help. And even now, having just passed my 10th year in recovery, pride, ego and fear are still available to rampage and ruin any day. Fortunately for me, I am aware of all the defects of character and all the words which are associated with extreme negative behaviour. What drives pride, ego and fear? Life can drive anyone to distraction. If we do not stop ourselves when things go wrong, hungry angry lonely tired will make it worse. And we need to ask for help from whatever source. It's about how we respond, and not blaming other people when they respond to us in horrible ways. As we point the finger at them, there are three fingers pointing back at us, each one laced with venom. We are our own poison.

Two people from local government/contractors came to see me yesterday. And I had not made an agenda for the meeting, which was about rewiring, which is required by law. Over the last few months, it has been disastrous, the way things have evolved and gone downhill. Anyway the two people who came, new on the scene, were open honest and willing to be helpful. So without blame or criticism of them, I was able to share the truth of incompetence, and they were able to share their truth and their belief in their competence to get things done. So, rather than go into the negative, and dig into old problems, we agreed to move forward with a bit of faith and confidence that things may become better through time.

Step six, personality traits: the headline emotional reactions and responses are most likely to come out as pride, fear and ego. And if I can just stop long enough, and then work on my own personal shortcomings, try to have a bit of courage, faith and confidence, and stick with the truth, rather than go into blame, and anger, the outcome is likely to improve. I don't expect the rest of the world to operate this way, but if I operate and improve my courage, faith and confidence on a daily basis, far more outcomes will be positive. And when they are negative, they can go fuck themselves. I don't mean that, truly I don't, but it is part of the road to acceptance and forgiveness of others who inadvertently or deliberately try cut us down on any given day.

Humour is so important in recovery, as long as we laugh at ourselves, first and foremost, we do improve our tolerance and love of humanity, even when they are emerging from the Stone Age emotionally.

Truth is my spiritual touchstone. And when I veer away from the truth, life is difficult. I ran out of steam about a month ago, full of cold, extreme back pain and the usual stuff dealing with type I diabetes. And even though life was very painful, I did have a lot of gratitude to be sober one day at a time. And then the washing machine packed in as well.

Life is funny, you never know where the next laugh is going to come from. And although I might have lost my muse for writing, it did not stop me having a zest for living. After all, I have been writing for a long time, and if you did not need a break from it, I certainly did. And May is step five month in my refresher of the steps. On a personal level, I concentrate on one step a month, and try live the principles of all the steps every day. Again I have to say, life is difficult, even when it's funny. When I was trying to get my old washing machine which was broken out of my apartment, at one in the morning, in nearly toppled down the stairs. And loud clatters probably unnerved my neighbours. And the next day my new washing machine arrived at 8 AM and the old one was taken away.

The new washing machine is wonderful. Once I had taken the door off the kitchen, I thought it would go through nicely. I had thought, having checked the dimensions before buying, that the washing machine would glide through into the kitchen without having to remove the door. But having unpacked the washing machine, the old dimensions had been amended to new dimensions, which meant the washing machine ought not go through at all, even with the door off. Undeterred, I gave it a lot of thought and then got the fucking thing through the gap and then left it to the next day to set it up. It works perfectly, although there are a few scratches on the back. Don't tell anyone!

So my cold is better, and even though I got the new washing machine into the kitchen and it works perfectly, I cannot say it was an easy insertion into its place amongst the hotch potch of appliances in a very small space. And my back is okay as well, having used a bit of science, leverage and cuss words to get things straight. Clean bedding, clean shirts, and a bit more clarity about physics, leverage and vocabulary not fit for the BBC. How washing machine's work has improved over the last 15 years is another revelation.

Practising all the principles of the 12 step program has helped to keep me sober over the last few weeks. A cold, a cough, agitated slipped discs, unpredictable blood sugar levels and the use of many rude words is all part of life. Step one has remained constant and 100%. There have been many moments of being restored to sanity. Letting go and asking for help is very helpful. A reminder to myself of how it used to be, and a self-appraisal is a reminder to self about how easy it would be to slip backwards. Sharing my situation on a daily basis has kept me honest. I have enjoyed my defects of foul language and modest amounts of indulgence in sinful thoughts. And then clarity through courage, faith and confidence in doing the next right thing. I'm reminded of the amends I still need to make, and hopefully I will win the lottery one of these days. No harm to be done with other possible amends. I have forgiven myself for my lack of foresight, and I have forgiven the washing machine for being too big to get into the kitchen. A lot of meditation has been going on I can assure you. And I hope to be carrying the message with better clarity, one day at a time.

April 14 Video

DonInLondon April 12, 2014: step four month: "fear less inventory." And what about steps 10, 11 and 12? When is it the right time to learn about the steps, sequentially? I do believe that we can learn about the steps from day one of sobriety. Like anything we are learning, putting things into practice takes time, we learn, we adopt, we try out, we make mistakes and we make mistakes and we make mistakes over and over again. It is never too late or too early to keep on learning what the steps mean in reality.

I heard this recently: "My sponsor has me on step one, and I'm still on it, after a year!" The good news is we are always on step one, if we are in tune with the principles of living life with freedom and without the need to manipulate and control anything. The bad news, sitting on step one, or continually wondering what happens in step two for a whole year may not be very helpful. All the steps work together as we live life one day at a time. So whether we like it or not, or we feel we have not done a particular step, after a while, being sober, you cannot fail to be doing the steps! The question is: "are you consciously aware of what you are doing and the impact of the steps, or are you sort of mysteriously wondering whether or not a mystical presence is working in your life?"

If I ruled the world, every day would start with step one, a meditation, and reminder of what it is to have freedom of choice based on powerlessness over a substance or thing, and not making my life unmanageable. When I say, "if I ruled the world," what I mean is I would be trying to impose step one on everybody else and not me! So I better stick to my own behaviour and actions when it comes to the steps. The steps I take apply to me and my actions, my attitudes and what goes on in my mind. So if I tread on your toes, tell me to bugger off.

Sometimes it can be very difficult to work out what to do next, and when we feel we are being held back for some reason, there needs to be a reason, not some vague statement about, "not ready." And there is nothing to stop you as a human being, advancing your understanding of the steps, by doing a bit of reading, doing some research, and having a go to see what happens. And if you are uncertain about anything, you can always ask someone sitting next to you in a meeting, and if they don't know maybe both of you need a little bit more help from other sources. Ignorance is not bliss, ignorance leads to thinking that life is moving in mysterious ways? Indeed, life does move in mysterious ways, usually because somebody is not telling us what is going on. Fearless inventory is about you, and your judgement of yourself. Don't get bogged down by other people's judgements one day at a time.

We don't always get our own way in recovery, in my experience, letting go my way, the narrow path of life is absolutely necessary. The more I don't know and need to ask about the more possibilities open up, because I am not limited to my own opinion or beliefs. Much of what we do on a daily basis is make sense of what we can do next to cover our needs and feel secure. More than this? Needs met, wants forgotten, and then we have more time to play one day at a time.

Alcoholics Anonymous | April 11 2004 - 2014 | DonInLondon | Step 4 "Fear Less Inventory"

Alcoholics Anonymous Blog & Video | April 11 2004 - 2014 | DonInLondon | Step 4 "Fear Less Inventory"

April 11 Video

DonInLondon April 11, 2014: step four month: "fear less inventory." What have I got to fear today? Nothing! I have not had a gut wrenching feeling of fear recently. When I went to the hospital to get some test results for internal examinations and scans, it was only a couple of minutes beforehand that I experienced any grip of fear. And the outcome, is there is nothing to worry about. And there is nothing sinister to report from scans within.

And I guess with the help of Fellowship and the serenity prayer in particular, I keep on learning what I can do, and what I cannot do, and the wisdom to know the difference. Some things cannot be speeded up to be done efficiently in my time frame. I just need to know and ask about the time frame, which is being worked to any particular subject, activity and outcome. I am often in a queue when it comes to medical matters, telephone answering services and the fact that people have lives to lead which are quite separate from my own. Nothing to fear on that score, just be aware of my own impatience.

An absolute delight this week to be involved in a project being run by somebody else. I was asked to role-play a despicable husband! And fortunately somebody else had written the words, because I have never been a despicable husband, more often a fast-moving and hard to pin down partner in real life. Until now, of course, I'm not frightened and I don't feel that I need to measure up to any particular standard of behaviour beyond open honest and willing to be myself and have a go. But it was good to see how easily relationships can be made good, or can be made bad depending on what people say and do and their motives which are often hidden, even to themselves.

Less fear, more faith: an attractive sound bite. But what does it mean in practice? In the past, it would be fear of what might happen if I got things wrong, and very often the blinkers would go on because of it. Or worse, imagination would take hold and I would not measure up to what I imagined I was supposed to do, be it romance or finance. More faith in trying new things, more faith in making mistakes and learning from them, more faith in being myself and not trying to be someone else takes away the pressure I would inflict upon myself, and worse, give up my power to bullying types who are all around us all the time.

Being secure by being myself: reminding myself every single day that there will be good, bad and ugly situations and I don't know what they are going to be, until they start happening. When I interact with other people, I might be very open, honest and willing to participate, it does not mean everybody else feels the same way, and sometimes we will encounter people who have lots of fear going on. And they who fear are not only brutal with themselves, they are brutal with other people around them. Sometimes we can help and offer support, and other times we need keep our own counsel, or we get our heads bitten off.

Can do can't do: learning what I can do, change me and my attitudes is a possibility. Cannot do: it's not my job to change, you or even think I should try correct another person’s attitudes and behaviour. At the same time if somebody is being bad and ugly with me or anyone else, I can say so, because it is the truth. And then I need deal with the consequences of my truth telling. And telling the truth will not always be tolerable to other people as we trample on their beliefs and opinions about reality today.

DonInLondon 2004 - 2013

Alcoholics Anonymous | April 11 2013 | DonInLondon | Step 4 "Fear Less Inventory" For example: twelve steps to help with in everyday life: what happens when you wake up? Have you got a head full of thinking about what you have to do, and how do you feel about that? I need to get up and get washed, I'm in a rush, and I’ve got things to do. And if I don't get started now, I'll never catch up. I must do this, I must do that, and I am already hungry, angry, lonely and tired! I haven't got time to think about recovery right now…

For example: I've had a sleepless night, only a couple of hours of sleep or less, my head is churning with all the things I am worried about. Deadlines, what people think of me, I'm short of money, where did my romance go, why does it always happen to me? I haven't got time to put recovery into practice right now. It's all right for some, they seem to live and breathe recovery, but they don't have my problems, and my problems are getting in the way of anything to do with spiritual. And spiritual is for wimps, emotional nonsense is not something for me.

For example: I want to follow the old dream, where I can do anything, I can be with anyone, and the world is at my feet. I am frustrated by life, it never seems to be quite what it was supposed to be. Other people got the breaks and I didn't. And when I got my break, somebody undermined me. I don't like the way the world is, what am I going to do to get ahead, and be number one in my work or family or both. When will people really see me and what I'm worth. Why don't people do what I tell them to do. Why doesn't anyone see my point of view. They undermined me, they robbed me of my chances, no wonder I drank, no wonder I had another affair, no wonder the world has gone to hell in a hand basket. There is no God. And I haven't got time for anything to do with this recovery nonsense, life is too short. Those people in fellowship, I don't know where they are, I reckon they are on another planet. A bit like Brazil, where the nuts come from…

For example: If I am pulled back into the negative way of thinking, and the madness of how it life used to be starts to rule my actions, I will completely forget about emotional and spiritual, because that is just what happens. When I forget to check out my mood, in the most straightforward way, H.A.L.T. hungry, angry, lonely and tired, forgetting these feelings will place me in a negative mood all day long. Are we that simple? In our decision-making, so often we are driven by thoughts, we forget what is driving them, feelings drive our mood, feelings drive us mad, feelings can help us get back to sanity. We are so programmed to believe that thinking rules everything and that thinking comes first, because we have been taught to think. And there are very few lessons in emotions: "feelings always drive what happens next." Using thinking to explore your emotional and spiritual life? Truth, love and wisdom: explore the truth of how you are feeling right now, explore who you love and how important love is in your life. And then ask yourself, what do I need to do today? Who takes time to understand their mood right now? Probably people who know it's a good idea to know your mood and then understand why you're thinking is quite wonky today…

For example: I feel good, I think good, and I have good outcomes, sometimes it works out my way, often it just works out the way it can. I feel bad, I think bad and the outcomes are bad, and I knew it would be that way! It felt ugly, and the more I thought about it, it was very ugly and outcomes were ugly as well. When I felt good, I was not hungry, angry, lonely and tired, but when life was going bad, it just got me down and I couldn't get out of it. And when it was ugly, I felt so angry and horrible. I could not sleep. And I missed breakfast, I was late, and nothing was going well… Why didn't I consider doing a step ten last night and writing a gratitude list, and why have I forgotten to do this for ages, or given no time to me to work out how to start again. Why don't I do the basics, basics are for wimps! Or are they?

How am I feeling this morning? When I woke up, I felt thirsty, blood sugars too high, need insulin, inject insulin. What is my mood? How am I really feeling? The true answer right now is I felt better for a cup of coffee. I felt worse, listening to the news, because I have time to do so. I felt better doing a couple of morning routines. And then of course I am reminded of my morning meditation which takes a few seconds: "step one, I am powerless over people places and things and if I try control them, life will get unmanageable. Step two, doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result is mad. Step three, let go my way, being the only way, and ask for help if I feel I need it." "Can do cannot do and wisdom to know the difference." That few second meditation in my head or spoken aloud, it takes as much time as it does to switch on the kettle, go for a pee and flush the loo. Those few seconds focusing on, can do cannot do and then the big question, how am I feeling? If you know your starting point with your mood, you will know what needs to be done. Usually if we feel H.A.L.T. Hungry or angry or lonely or tired, or all of them, we need conscious contact with someone and in recovery, hopefully we can…

Alcoholics Anonymous | April 11 2012 | DonInLondon | Step 4 "Fear Less Inventory" Today's AA daily reflection: "a word to drop: blame" the key for me in all this notion of blame is to remind myself of the serenity prayer, "serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference..."

Video For Today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR35RCNDcoA

Step four is clearly difficult when our heads are full of old attitudes and behaviour where we may have blamed the world for our woes. In the writing of our inventory, which is sometimes called the grudge list we start to see where the blame is, most often continuing to do the same old things expecting something to happen which is different. A lot to do with step two in my case, where being restored to sanity is contingent on my ability to remember what I can and cannot do today and need remind myself on a daily basis with the serenity prayer and a reminder to self, "I need ask for help when needed!"

Practising and living life with the benefit of the twelve steps really helped in early days after step four and step ten and spot-check inventories continually let me see my part in all matters. Often my part where situations will not to my liking meant I was either in the wrong situation or expecting the situation to change with regard to people, places and things. In the past I have lingered too long in the wrong place with the wrong people trying to do the right thing! Stopping old behaviour and having the courage, faith and confidence to move on, let go and very often say no… Especially in the finance and romance departments…

Key triggers to relapse and disaster are often highlighted, especially activities involving finance and romance. Spot checks of my part in matters, where I might be wanting rather than needing finance and romance to work will always place me in risky situations. Romance and finance are absolutely part of life and if we are fearless and rigorous and honest, rather than needy and sneaky and hoping against the odds, chances are we feel better able to cope with reality, especially when we are successful…

Yesterday, a medical consultation regarding physical and emotional ailments. I set my expectations to zero, and during the hour and a quarter wait, at the diabetic clinic, I read up on what the consultation ought to be based on information on the leading diabetes UK website. If I had set my expectations to those suggested on the website as to conduct of the consultant, I would have walked away full of anger and resentment. Utilising the program and with zero expectations I was able to walk away with a modicum of anger and resentment, and reciting the serenity prayer put me back on track for the rest of the day… No blame, medical services do not set their own standards, it is a political and historical mess…

DonInLondon 2005-2011

Steps one to nine are in an order for a reason. When I came into fellowship under my own steam, my then sponsor suggested the practice of step ten, eleven and twelve were good to practice from the outset. Step ten, what disturbed me and a gratitude list. Step eleven, pray and meditate. Twelve, get to meetings every day, be there and listen...

As we wake, dreams fade, feelings and thoughts emerge. How am I feeling, why and what to do, a thousand thoughts not yet formed ~ Kahlil Gibran "In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed" -/- Step three and acceptance, opens up our choices for today...

No single human source is a higher power, truth is developed through learning our own wisdom and wisdom from many others life experiences. We can find it difficult to listen and hear truth ~ Leo Buscaglia "Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around" -/- Listening and hearing truth, a human skill we can develop...

AA Daily Reflection: A WORD TO DROP: "BLAME" To see how erratic emotions victimized us often took a long time. We could perceive them quickly in others, but only slowly in ourselves. First of all, we had to admit that we had many of these defects, even though such disclosures were painful and humiliating. Where other people were concerned, we had to drop the word “blame” from our speech and thought. TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 47

When I did my Fourth Step, following the Big Book guidelines, I noticed that my grudge list was filled with my prejudices and my blaming others for my not being able to succeed and to live up to my potential. I also discovered I felt different because I was black. As I continued to work on the Step, I learned that I always had drunk to rid myself of those feelings. It was only when I sobered up and worked on my inventory, that I could no longer blame anyone.

As Bill Sees It ~ Spot-Checking A spot-check inventory taken in the midst of disturbances can be of very great help in quieting stormy emotions. Today's spot check finds its chief application to situations which arise in each day's march. The consideration of long- standing difficulties had better be postponed, when possible, to times deliberately set aside for that purpose.

The quick inventory is aimed at our daily ups and downs, especially those where people or new events throw us off balance and tempt us to make mistakes. TWELVE AND TWELVE PP. 90-91
